Feel the fear and do it anyway
I consider myself to be quite adventurous. I love travelling solo, exploring the unknown, and saying ‘yes’ at most available opportunities (possibly a little too much).
That said, there are many things in this life that I have absolutely no desire to do. Skydiving, bungee jumping, cliff diving - Basically anything that involves the possibility of going splat from a great height.
Then, there’s the inbetweeny camp: The things which I would actually really like to do, but I’m scared. Scared of failure. Scared of embarrassing myself. Scared of hurting myself. This year, I am trying to be braver when it comes to that camp.
Target number one: Skiing. As many of you will know, Kate skis. Kate hurtles down mountains at great speed and seems to have a lovely time. My partner does a snow holiday every year, and seems to have a lovely time. So many people attach themselves to planks of wood and zoom about on the snow and seem to have a lovely time.
This year, the FOMO (fear of missing out) and gentle coaxing from my nearest and dearest were enough for me to finally step out of my comfort zone and get it done.
So, I flew to France, and with heart thumping and sweaty palms, I got myself some skis. Sadly, I wasn’t the immediate prodigy I’d hoped to be. I fell down (several times), I had a little cry, and shuffled down a slope on my bum, but then I got back up. By the end of the weekend, I’d hit a top speed of 28.7 KMPH and was almost enjoying myself. So much so, that I’ve just agreed to do a week in Austria in January.
Triumphant, at the bottom of the gentlest blue run.
Now, this isn’t a blog to get myself a pat on the back for bravery (though I would accept one), but a challenge:
What have you always wanted to do, that you’ve yet to have a go at?
What has been holding you back?
I’d love to hear about any of your own adventures and ambitions. And, if money is one of your concerns, we’d love you to get in touch, to let us see how we might be able to make it happen.
